McCain came out a little while ago saying that he wants to lift the bans on offshore drilling, with Bush following suit shortly afterward. On an extremely simplistic level this might seem like a good solution to our current woes.
Reality is that the technology isn't there to do "clean" drilling in the ocean. Beyond environmental issues, oil in the coastal waters spells economic disaster for the travel and tourism industries of the coastal communities. Otherwise, it's a pie in the sky solution that will not solve anything for the foreseeable future. Even if drilling in earnest was approved today, it would be years before it would end up helping the current oil market problems.
For years I've heard whispers about extremely efficient car engines sitting in laboratories gathering dust because the patents are owned by the oil companies. If those engines do exist, vacating the patents and handing the designs over to the car manufacturers would be a quicker way to tackle the current problems with oil dependence. Anything that would significantly decrease demand for oil in the long-term is a viable option. Not increasing supply at the expense of other sectors of our economy.

Totally agree, all the money that would go towards the "exploration" could simply go to research and develop of a successful environmentally friendly power source. How come there are countries like Iceland running public transportation with 0% emissions?
It just doesn't make sense, one of the most developed countries in the world not being self sufficient while potentially pouring poison on its future and willing to put more money towards destruction... deep deep sleep of the inno˘ent.

It was Bush Sr. that passed the legislation and backed by Republicans for years but some how the Democrats get all the credit.Even Jeb backed the no drill pollicy.But now they use it as a carrot.
It's time to forget about lowering gas prices and start really looking into alternative fuels and power.I think all they have to do is dust off the plans and start building.

All this pie in the sky about alternative energy is just that. Hey, if I could strap a windmill to the top of my car to stop paying for gas, I would, but the reality is, is that this country runs on oil, and until we can do what we're doing now with solar and wind power, we need more oil.
What is wrong with drilling for our own oil? It would create viable jobs, stimulate the economy, and stop us from spending billions on foreign oil. And in the meantime, if a viable clean energy source is found and able to work efficiently, then by all means, let's do that too, but to tell everyday Americans that 'you'll just have to suffer until solar panels are put up on your house' isn't going to fly with middle-America.
It seems when uninformed people think of off-shore drilling, they think it's going to be right off the coast and an eyesore and environmentally unfriendly. The fact of the matter is, these platforms will be out over the horizon by a long-shot, and technology has come so far over the past 20-30 years, it's virtually environmentally friendly to extract. Have a little faith in American ingenuity will ya?
In reality, if windmills and solar power were the wave of the future, don't you think there would be some entreprenurial (sic) investors out there making billions off of it. As far as I know, there isn't.
Oh, and let's not forget that the 'evil' George Bush has put more money into alternative energies than any other president, but I guess you don't want to hear that.
