Just Debate, Already

LeftyLucy ~

John McCain took the bold step yesterday of suspending his campaign so he could focus on the economic crisis. Cool. I think everyone with any potential to effect change should be focusing on the economy right now.

(But if I may be cynical, as usual for just a moment: why does one need to make a huge public statement about the suspension of the campaign, if not to gain political capital? Why couldn’t he just stop making campaign speeches, get back to the Senate, and let his actions speak for themselves? It reminds me of religious folks who like to mention to other people that they’re fasting; it doesn’t serve any purpose to tell people except that they want people to look favorably upon them.

In other words: McCain’s public statement about how he’s transcending politics shows that he’s not.)

Speeches aside, though, I think it’s a fine move and I truly applaud him for focusing on this enormous problem. Let me be clear that I was only criticizing his statement about his actions, not the actions themselves. I also applaud Bush for inviting McCain and Obama to meet with him on the economy.

But let’s talk about the debates for a moment. Tomorrow night, McCain and Obama are supposed to square off in their first Presidential candidate debate. More specifically, the debate format has been expanded and loosened to allow the candidates to spar about the issues, which is a welcome change to the dueling oratories we’ve seen in the past.

So it’s frustrating that McCain wants to postpone the debate until next week. This country desperately needs to hear from the two candidates about how they plan to address our economic troubles long-term. I can’t think of a more important time for us to hear from them. Go to Washington, figure out what we’re going to do now, and then go to Mississippi and spend a couple of hours telling us your plans for the next four or eight years.

We are in serious trouble on a number of fronts - the economy, the wars, diplomacy, energy - and we need to hear how our leaders plan to fix the mess we’re in.

Just debate, already.

As we have seen over the last couple of days this is the Republican campaign machine at work.Always putting the quest for power before all else.
